Project #1: PSA (or Public Service Announcement)
Requirements: Must follow the directions below, film must be 30 seconds in length, have music that goes with the piece, and must be on an important issue.
Steps:
Pre-production side: (Note: The computers may not remember your work so try saving everything to your student portal or a thumbdrive.)
1. Go here: http://www.sph.umn.edu/pdf/news/nphw/PSATopics.pdf
2. Pick a topic from the list and then go to google and type it in to search for information on it.
3. Think of an angle you could come at the issue to persuade your audience to save, or help whatever it is your issue is.
4. Open up a word document to list the websites where you have gotten your information. Find relevant quotes, stats, and key info. to give your audience the basics. Remember, it is an ad and as such, it should be persuasive so find some things that would persuade you. Make sure to save.
5. Search for pictures. Your PSA will be made up of pictures. Think about the kinds of images you would show that would be persuasive and/or moving to your audience. You will include the URL for the original picture location (not google images) in your word document as well. Save the pictures either to a thumbdrive (safest way) or to a location you will remember on the computer. Make sure they look high quality and do not have any copyright or labels on the pictures themselves.
Production (watch and re-watch throughout so you catch mistakes and think up creative ideas):
6. Once you have your pictures and info. then you are ready to start editing. It will be different whether you are on a Mac or PC. If you are on a Mac then you will find iMovie (look for the icon or go to the blue search icon at the bottom and click on it and type in iMovie). If it is a PC then you can either look for or download Windows Movie Maker or open up Adobe Premiere.
7. Next you will need to get the pictures you want into the editing software. Basically, going to file and import and then finding your pictures will do it.
8. All editing software has what's called a timeline. You will arrange your pictures in the order that you want in this timeline. You will also figure out the length you want each picture to show for and adjust.
9. Next you will want to adjust the pictures (if you would like) with some special effects: like the Ken Burns effect which makes the pictures look film-like because the 'camera' seemingly zooms in gradually to the picture. iMovie also has a way of setting starting and ending points to make it look even more film-like.
10. Then you will add titles. You will want to pick a theme, size, and font that is fitting. This is how you will add in your important information from your research. Add it over pictures you feel would be best or you can add some of them over a blank screen.
11. Next decide if you would like to do any narration. You will need a microphone. You will need to place it over the correct part of the timeline.
12. Next it's time to pick music. iMovie may have some music easily accessible and already in iMovie. But either way you can use music you own or get music off of youtube.com by finding a youtube MP3 converter. If youtube is not accessible then you may have to do this from home. Or use http://freeplaymusic.com/
13. Once everything is perfect. And it's 30 seconds long exactly then you are ready to export. Exporting is necessary. You will want to export it to a thumbdrive so your work isn't lost.
14. Feel good that you are done. That's a reward in itself.
